2 Louisville and to Nashville
Day 2 - First full day - exploring Louisville: With the help of the Baders (thank you!) we learned about Cherokee Park and Cave Hill Cemetery - our first two stops of the day. Cherokee Park is a beautiful park outside of the downtown area. The trees there were starting to get some color. The Cave Hill Cemetery is a large, beautiful cemetery that is well maintained. It also has several sections devoted to the Civil War dead - on both sides of the Mason Dixon Line. It was interesting to observe the nature of the graves. The Northerners’ section looked a lot like Arlington Cemetery - with the bright white markers lined up in neat rows. The Southern graves seemed older, much more worn and aged. In addition to many soldiers buried there, Colonel Sanders’s final resting place is here. After the visit to the cemetery, we stopped for coffee in the Highland area, a hip area with lots of shopping, and passed through the campus of the University of Louisville (very pretty and big). Then we visited Churchill Downs - home of the Kentucky Derby. We took a tour of the track and Denise tried on a few of the gorgeous hats that show up on race day. It was such fun. We would love to come back on race day. Our next stop was the Louisville Slugger Factory. Did you know that most every ball player signs a contract with Louisville Slugger - and it’s that signature (and the year in which they sign) that appears on their wooden plaque on the wall of fame at the factory? They have over 8000 engraved signatures. And once the ball players make it to the Hall of Fame, a new plaque in black is posted with the year of their entry to the Hall. After the visit to the Louisville Slugger Factory, we took a walk through “Old Louisville” - a beautiful part of the town. I shot pictures of the park and a number of attractive, older homes in this area (which explains the houses at the end of this group of pictures). The homes are stately, well-kept and inviting city-homes. Just a little more flavor of this city! After this stop - we hit the trail to Nashville (caught a lovely sunset on the road). And the last picture is Denise happily sitting in Dumas restaurant in Nashville!
